I will increase social grant to Shs100,000 - Biriggwa

Mr Wasswa Birigwa

What you need to know:

  • The FDC chairperson, Mr Wasswa Birigwa- who is jointly canvassing for votes with fellow aspirant and party president Patrick Amuriat, told Teso Sub-region party delegates last week that the current grant is meagre.
  • The party candidates started traversing the country for votes last month.
  • The candidate with the highest votes from the 1,200 delegates will carry the party flag in the 2021 General Election.

The aspirant for the FDC presidential flag bearer, Mr Wasswa Biriggwa, has promised to increase the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) from Shs25,000 monthly to Shs100,000.

Mr Biriggwa, the FDC chairperson, who is jointly canvassing for votes with fellow aspirant and party president Patrick Amuriat, told Teso Sub-region party delegates last week that the current grant is meagre.
He also said he will ensure that all students are given free computers from as early as primary level to tertiary institutions to promote ICT.
Mr Biriggwa said the Asian nations such as Singapore that were once at the same footing 30 years ago  with Uganda have vibrant economies unlike Uganda .

“We have to start technologies, children must have computers, tablets. The economy we are moving in is an economy of information and financial services,” he said.

Mr Amuriat said he envisions a government where children from rich families  go to the same school with those from humble backgrounds.

He said his government will also equip the health sector, adding that specialised treatment should be for all.
“People should be able to go to Soroti hospital and find treatment,” he said, adding that those who seek specialised treatment abroad should do that at their expense, not taxpayers’ money.
