What you need to know:

  • According to the 2014 national population census data, Jinja is the largest metropolitan area witha population of 72,931 and an average annual household income is estimated at $100 (Shs362, 600).

Jinja. Jinja Municipality will require nearly Shs35 billion to deliver some basic services to the population of the once vibrant industrial town, Daily Monitor has learnt.
The Shs34.6 billion budget was laid by the Jinja Municipal Council last week, with about two months left to enter the new financial year— 2017/2018.

Presenting the budget framework last Friday, the secretary for finance, Ms Robina Kazahura, indicated that the budget has increased by Shs4 billion compared to the previous year due to more pressing demands for proper service delivery.
“There has been an increase in the budget from Shs30.8 billion to Shs34.6 billion. The council expects to get Shs28.6 billion from the central government and the balance will be raised from local revenues,” Ms Kazahura said, adding: “Shs15 billion has been earmarked for capital development projects (such as road works, construction of hospital and schools), Shs10 billion for wages and Shs19.6 billion for recurrent expenditure.”

What money is for
Jinja Mayor Majid Batambuze in his submission said the budget, if met, will help complete projects that had stalled before he assumed office.
“In this budget, we shall ensure solar panels are installed so that our streets are not in darkness any more,” Mr Batambuze said.
