Jinja Road to become six-lane
What you need to know:
KCCA spokesperson says the reconstruction process will last six months and will involve pavement reconstruction, and upgrading of the drainage system, among others.
A section of Jinja Road that stretches from Kitgum House to Katalima Road in Nakawa will, starting next week, undergo a six-month reconstruction that will turn it into a six-lane drive road.
The project that will cost Shs8.9 billion was awarded to Energo project Limited by the Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) in a highly contested bidding.
Mr Peter Kaujju, the Authority’s spokesperson, said the solicitor general has already endorsed the project.
“The contractor (Energo) is currently working on the traffic management plan ahead of road works scheduled to commence September 23, 2013,” Mr Kaujju said in a news release signed yesterday.
He said the scope of work will involve pavement reconstruction, upgrading of the drainage system and placement of road furniture.
The contract period is six months.
Jinja Road is 2.9km, although after the reconstruction, Mr Kaujju said, the total distance of the lane will be 8.4km.
The authority also received a World Bank grant to reconstruct and upgrade roads stretching from the junction at Kabira Country Club in Bukoto, including the route from Kiira Police Station to Kenjoy Supermarket.
The planned road works are expected to extend to Ntinda junction.
According to an Email from Mr Robert Kalumba, the KCCA deputy spokesperson, notices were served to more than 40 people to attend a stakeholders meeting about the same.
“The purpose mainly was to inform the affected people about the planned road works and how the upgrading works will affect each member,” the email reads.
Among other road projects up for reconstruction in the city are; Kabaka Anjagala, Nakasero Road, Buganda Road, Wandegeya Road, Queens Lane, Mutungo Biina and Banda Circular.
