Authorities in Soroti Municipality have resolved to close illegal structures and businesses operating in the area.
Mr Moss Otimong, the town clerk, said despite several warnings, people have continued establishing illegal structures on road reserves, open green spaces and corridors.
“We do not want illegal businesses and buildings in town, anybody who wants to operate business in town must consult us for proper direction,” he said.
Mr Otimong said the illegal structures would be demolished between August 14 and September.
“We have given them an ultimatum of 14 days to relocate their businesses. If they have not complied with our notices, it will tantamount to forceful eviction, demolition of facilities and their commodities will be impounded without any compromise,” he added.
Some of the businesses at risk of closure include washing bays, kiosks and restaurants, among others.
Mr Otimong said the impounded products would be kept at Soroti Municipal stores pending compliance from the owners and those that are not followed up will be auctioned after one month.
Mr Isaac Asaku, the deputy mayor, said zoning businesses can lead to improved hygiene and sanitation.
“Soroti was one of the cleanest and organised towns in Uganda, if this is achieved, we shall gain our lost glory,” he said.
