Machete welding men hack 85-year-old to death
NAKASEKE. Police in Nakaseke have launched a hunt for unidentified suspected assailants who attacked and hacked to death an 85-year-old man and injured seriously injured his wife at Nakazi village Semuto Subcounty on Thursday night.
Constantine Ssemakadde (85) was attacked as he came out of his house at 10:00pm by the suspects forcing him to make an alarm which attracted his wife, Ms Gertrude Nalubega (52). The suspects reportedly used machetes to inflict bodily injuries and later fled the home leaving the 2 in a pool of blood.
The police and residents who came to their rescue after found Ssemakade unconscious and died on his way to Nakaseke Hospital.
“Ssemakadde died on his way to Nakaseke Hospital but Gertrude Nalubega is now admitted at Kiwoko Hospital in Nakaseke District. The police visited the scene and efforts to have the suspects arrested are underway as investigations continue," said Mr Paul Kangave the Savana Region Police Spokesperson.
Ssemakadde sustained multiple bodily injuries as a result of the attack. The motive of the attack is yet to be ascertained, Kangave said.
Mr Francis Sseviri, a resident of Nakazi village who heard the alarm and joined other residents who responded claims that the children locked themselves inside the house and possibly made it difficult for the suspected assailants to enter the house.
We found the door still locked when we arrived with the police at about 10:15pm. We are surprised that the panga-wielding men have now entered Nakaseke District. It is possible that these people had the intention of entering the house after attacking and injuring Ssemakadde but the fact that the children locked the door from inside made the plan difficult, Sseviri revealed in an interview.
Another resident identified as Margaret Nakalembe (50) said Ssemakadde who has been the Chairperson of Semuto Peoples’ SACCO located at Semuto Town Council about 3kms from Nakazi village has been a prominent landlord owning more than 250 acres of land in Semuto Sub county.
"We suspect that possibly the attackers could be interested in some of the property including the big chunk of land he owned," said Nakalembe.
The Daily Monitor could not independently ascertain the land related claims although several other residents said that the deceased owned hundreds of acreage of Land in Semuto Sub county.
