Man seeks one shilling from each Ugandan for hip replacement

Geoffrey Okello

A 33-year-old resident of Lira Municipality in Lira District says if each Ugandan supported him with one shilling; the money would be more than enough for his treatment.

Mr Geoffrey Okello, a resident of Junior quarters in Adyel Division, has for the last 10 months suffered excruciating pain, as a result of arthritis of the hip joint.

Okello now requires a total hip replacement, but for the operation to be conducted, he needs about Shs23 million.

“I started feeling the pain in August 2018. I went to Kumi Orthopedic Hospital for the first time in December that year and I was examined,” Mr Okello says.

According to the medical examination conducted at Kumi Orthopedic Hospital recently, plain X-rays of the pelvis, revealed evidence of a vascular necrosis of the right head of femur with features of early osteoarthritis.

“The pain was of insidious onset that has progressively worsened. It is aggravated by walking and relived by paid medication,” Dr John Ekure said in the medical report.

An invoice issued to him ahead of the surgery shows that Okelloneeds Shs22.5million, but he does not have that kind of money.

“The biggest challenge is that currently I’m jobless, and have four children including two that are under my custody. Right now I don’t have money and I call upon all the well-wishers to come to my rescue and God will bless you abundantly,” he says.

“But if each Ugandan could only contribute Shs1, the money would be Shs34 million – more than enough to relieve my pain forever.”

In 2014, the Population of Uganda stood at 34 million, according to the National Population and Housing Census.
