The ex-town clerk is attaching municipality property to recover Shs250 million awarded him.
Masaka
Former Masaka District assistant town clerk Edward Kiwanuka Gwavu has listed the properties that he will attach to recover money that the High Court awarded him as damages.
Among the properties are the Mayor’s garden and land reserved for the district headquarters.
This following a court ruling in a case that he had filed against the Masaka Municipal Council and Masaka District local administration for wrongful dismissal in 2007.
Justice Catherine Bamugemereire in September ordered the two institutions to reinstate him in his job as assistant town clerk and pay him all the salary arrears on top of Shs200 million as damages. The institutions, however, did nothing. This prompted Mr Gwavu to seek to attach the council property to recover his money.
The council reacted by trying to block Mr Gwavu in court. They lost and the ex-town clerk was given more Shs55 million in legal costs. Among the properties attached are Plot 9 along Edward Avenue which houses the Women and Youth Resource Centre, Plot 16 located on Birch Avenue, the Mayor’s Gardens, land behind Barclays Bank which was reserved for the district headquarters.
Masaka Mayor Godfrey Kayemba has said the council is doing its best to compensate Mr Gwavu and that he should not proceed with attaching the Town Council property. He said there are plans to reinstate Mr Gwavu in his job and that Shs50 million has already been deposited in his account.
