Mob kills suspected motorcycle thief

That prompted him to call the police for rescue but arrived when the suspect had already been killed.

A mob at Kasodo trading center in Pallisa District on Wednesday morning lynched an unidentified person suspected to be part of the gang that has been terrorising motorcyclists in the area.

Mr Kalenzi Makisimyano, the LC1 chairman for Nagodi village in Kasodo Sub County said that he received a phone call from area residents who notified him of a suspected thief being lynched in his village. That prompted him to call the police for rescue but arrived when the suspect had already been killed.

“The killers of this man are not from Kasodo because according to my people, a team of riders from Kamuli came chasing the deceased until they caught him here and beat him to death. We don’t know him,” he said.

However, a police officer at the scene who preferred said by the time they reached the scene, the people had already left after killing the man.

“The police condemn mob actions against any suspect. We advise residents to always engage the police without resorting to mob action. We have not arrested any person but investigations are underway to apprehend the key suspects. The body is currently at Pallisa Hospital Mortuary for postmortem and identify by relatives,” he said.

He further confirmed that a motorcycle Reg. No. UFJ 091F suspected to have been stolen was recovered from the scene and taken to Pallisa Central Police Station to help with investigations.

Mr Muhammad Namije, the chairperson of Boda Boda riders in Kasodo Sub County faulted the killers for lynching the man before giving proper information.

“They should have handed him over to the police so as to know his accomplices because running to Pallisa from Kamuli means he had gang members here,” he noted.
