MP withdraws community Ambulance he had donated to hospital
What you need to know:
He said the district considered the ambulance to be private and could not spend government money on either repairing or fuelling it for accountability reasons
Agago County MP John Amos Okot last Thursday made a u-turn and took away a community ambulance he had donated to Patongo HCIII last year.
The MP had donated the ambulance to support in the transportation of patients of referral cases from lower health units to district hospitals.
The ambulance Reg No UAL 804J, was reportedly bought to fulfil 2011 campaign pledges to the community. After it was handed over to the district, it reportedly remained parked at the health centre until two weeks ago when the MP took it away on claims that it was redundant.
The Agago district health officer Dr Emmanuel Otto told Daily Monitor that the ambulance was handed over to the then CAO Mr Oluka Francis without proper documentation or an MOU.
“ The community ambulance was not attached to any health center in the district and it did not have a log book although we had got some information that it was taken to Patongo HCIII to help in some emergencies,” he said.
According to Dr Otto, there was no MOU signed during the handover. After the hand over, the driver lost the keys and the ambulance remained grounded since then.
He said the district considered the ambulance to be private and could not spend government money on either repairing or fuelling it for accountability reasons.
However, attempts to get a comment from MP Okot were futile since his phone contact was not available by the time of compiling this story.
