Hannah Namuli Wamala Lule, the wife of the late President Yusuf Kironde Lule, who passed away on May 28, 2011, at Nakasero Hospital, was laid to rest in Lungujja, a Kampala suburb, yesterday.

She was 87 and had been bedridden for three years under 24-hour medical surveillance.
A requiem mass, in which various mourners spoke highly of her, was held at Namirembe Cathedral to celebrate her life.

Ms Rhoda Kalema, her longtime friend and fellow Old Budonian, described Hannah as, “a friendly, polite servant leader who was full of smiles and believed in happiness for everyone”.

Cherished marriage
She said Hannah, who got married to Prof. Lule after rejecting an arranged marriage by her parents, treasured the marriage institution so much that she recommended the registration of marriages—an initiative later taken up by President Idi Amin—who also started a women’s club to help them match their educated husbands by helping them access education opportunities.
Sula Muwanga, who spoke on behalf of the Lule’s family, described the late as a loving person who welcomed everyone to her home.

Muwanga said Ms Lule was so religious that she was one of the main contributors in the building of Kasenge and St. Steven Lungujja Church of Uganda.
Norah Lule, a daughter, described her mother as a great friend to the children and grandchildren.

Hannah is survived by six children, 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
