What you need to know:

  • The President was speaking during the celebrations organized by the Government Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa in Kiboga district on February 25, to celebrate the December 2017 constitutional amendment to remove presidential age limits.
  • Buganda Kingdom's Premier Charles Peter Mayiga has since protested the recommendation saying that any attempt to scrap the Mailo land tenure system would be met with outright resistance.

President Yoweri Museveni has assured Ugandans that his government cannot fail to find a solution to the land issues and therefore they should keep calm.

This statement comes amidst a new recommendation made by the Land Probe chaired by Lady Justice Catherine Bamugemereire to abolish the Mailo land tenure system which is a big asset to Kingdoms in the country.
Buganda Kingdom's Premier Charles Peter Mayiga has since protested the recommendation saying that any attempt to scrap the Mailo land tenure system would be met with outright resistance.

Following the Kingdom's bitter statement, the land probe committee came out to explain that its recommendation had been misunderstood since their suggestion was not to abolish the Mailo land tenure but rather that efforts be made to fuse it with the Freehold Tenure to make it a single tenure for purposes of clarity and cohesion.

Now without President Museveni coming out clearly on the new proposal by the land probe and an earlier proposal by government to amend Article 26 of the Constitution to allow for compulsory acquisition of land, which equally received a negative reaction, he appealed to the public not to allow anyone to cause alarm in relation to the land issues.

The President was speaking during the celebrations organized by the Government Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa in Kiboga district on February 25, to celebrate the December 2017 constitutional amendment to remove presidential age limits.

At the celebrations, Museveni promised that his government was going to work on issues concerning land and also find a permanent solution to the matter.
Meanwhile, President Museveni described the 317 MPs that voted in favour of the presidential age limit removal as the ‘new historicals’.

According to Museveni, the 317 legislators, mainly from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, contributed to the stability of the country.

Museveni stressed that the constitution with limitations was not flexible and had unfairly blocked competent old and young people who would be good leaders to participate in the leadership of the country.
"With the opening, there is flexibility. You can look at the whole menu of the young and the old. I am happy the 317 MPs saw and did the right thing," said Museveni.
