Museveni held hostage by own system, says Muntu

What you need to know:

  • If you do not agree with somebody, just move your way. This is the message I have for you as a leader.”
  • He said when the NRM leaders went to the bush, they yearned to have justice prevail in Uganda because many had been victims of the injustices of the past leaders.

The national coordinator of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) Party, Maj Gen (rtd) Mugisha Muntu, has said President Museveni is being held hostage by his own government system, which he said is soon collapsing.

Gen Muntu, a former Uganda People’s Defence Forces army commander, who also served as party president for the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) before forming his ANT party, has claimed that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government led by President Museveni has lost the moral authority of speaking against particular burning issues that affect the citizens.

“It is no longer a secret that [the] NRM government is collapsing. The mistakes they are doing such as acts of impunity and corruption, all point to a direction of a collapse,” he claimed.

“He (President Museveni) cannot stop corruption simply because his system benefits from this very device. This explains why many people have lost hope. You can imagine a situation where one who leaves the system without the illicit wealth is deemed stupid simply because he did not steal the public funds.

This is a sign of loss of confidence in the NRM government,” Gen Muntu told the ANT coordinators from north Buganda region, while attending a leader’s induction workshop at Kasana-Luweero Diocese Pastoral Centre in Luweero District on Monday.

He rallied the Opposition politicians to learn from the failing NRM government system that came into power with good strategies but turned against its own set principles.

“The NRM leaders decided to focus on how to retain power and how to make wealth while forgetting the people of Uganda who helped them capture power,” he said.

He also spoke against infighting within the Opposition.
“It is illogical for people within the Opposition to fight each other. I caution members of ANT party against attacking members of the other political parties. This is indiscipline that only breeds disunity within the Opposition,” he said.

He added: “You can imagine if such undisciplined people capture power, the rest of the people who do not tolerate their ways and views will be teargassed. If you do not agree with somebody, just move your way. This is the message I have for you as a leader.”

He said when the NRM leaders went to the bush, they yearned to have justice prevail in Uganda because many had been victims of the injustices of the past leaders.

NRM RESPONDS

However, NRM Secretariat media officer Rogers Mulindwa said the statements made by Gen Muntu would only hold water if he had stood out and made them while serving the NRM system.

“Muntu had all the opportunity to criticise the NRM when he was a commander but found no fault with the system. It is also surprising that Opposition politicians can only stand firm to speak when they front the name of President Museveni and not any other issue. They believe that without criticising President Museveni, then their talks sound empty,” he said.
