Museveni plans Kayunga visit over land wrangles
What you need to know:
Mending ties. The President, who had earlier summoned the district leaders to State House, is also expected to meet warring leaders.
The endless political wrangles and illegal land evictions in Kayunga District have forced President Museveni to make a third visit to the area in a period of only three months, in an effort to find a lasting solution to the problems.
Kayunga Woman MP Ida Nantaba yesterday said the President, who had earlier invited leaders from the district to State House on July 6 for a meeting to find ways of resolving the political wrangles, had cancelled the programme and instead opted to visit the district again on the same day.
“The President will meet landlords in the district at Kayonza Sub-county headquarters and later meet the wrangling Kayunga leaders at the district headquarters,” Ms Nantaba said.
The district leadership, led by the LC5 Chairman Steven Dagada, is wrangling with Ms Nantaba, with the former accusing Ms Nantaba of undermining them and calling them thieves.
Mr Dagada, who accuses Ms Nantaba of misappropriating relief food aid given to drought-hit residents in the district by government, has asked the IGG to investigate the MP over the matter.
However, Mr Dagada dismissed claims by Ms Nantaba that the President will visit the district on Friday.
“As far as I know, I am leading a delegation to State House on that day,” Mr Dagada said.
Meanwhile, in a bid to create jobs and market for locally produced raw materials, President Museveni has offered the district a factory for cooking oil, soap and vaseline.
Ms Nantaba, the coordinator of the project, said the construction of the factory in Bukolooto Trading Centre has already kicked off.
“The factory will use cooking oil from cotton seeds as its raw materials, which will create market for cotton which will increase household incomes of farmers,” Ms Nantaba said.
She added: “After the completion of this factory later this year, another factory to produce pineapple juice will be constructed in Kangulumira Sub-county.”
The two plants will create about 150 jobs.
Meeting rejection
The MP, however, criticised Kayunga Town authorities of trying to block construction of the factory in Bukolooto, on allegations that she had not been permitted by the town engineers.
“Construction of the plant will go on whether they want or not. This factory is going to benefit the people of Kayunga and not me,” she said.
But Ntenjeru South MP Patrick Nsanja urged the President to also fulfill other pledges he made to the people of Kayunga, such as tarmacking the Kayunga-Bbale Road and the two tractors for his constituency.
