KAMPALA-The Catholic Church has organised a mass wedding at Namugongo Shrine scheduled for May 14, where couples are to wed at minimal cost.

According to Namugongo Catholic Church, spokesperson Francis Muwonge, a couple that has already had introduction with in-laws and is seconded by the catholic parish leaders are legible to wed.

“So long as the couple has been seconded by the parish, they are wed at no cost. The Archbishop (Kizito Lwanga) has always asked for parishes to fundraise for couples that cannot afford to meet some of their personal costs like dressing and transport,” he said.

Speaking to Daily Monitor after Sunday prayers led by Fr Arnould Lwanga, who baptised five children, Mr Mwonge said the mass wedding, now an annual event, aims at encouraging financially constrained couples to bless their marriage.

You do not need registration fees for the wedding, the cake will be bought by the archbishop and a mini reception for those who cannot afford, Mr Mwonge said.

Asked how many couples are expected for the event, Mr Mwonge could not commit himself.

During mass, Fr Lwanga urged Christians to pray during Lent period. “One of the pillars of Lent is prayer.

It is not just babbling words, wishing that God would hear and answer all our needs, the first thing in prayer in humility. Remember who you are and who is God and put yourself in the right altitude. He is God and we are his creatures,” he said.
