New MPs told to popularise NRM party
What you need to know:
- The NRM’s director of information, publicity and public relations, Mr Emmanuel Lumala Dombo, in a statement yesterday urged them to focus on issues affecting their electorate.
Newly elected National Resistance Movement (NRM) MPs have been urged to popularise the party as they assume office next month.
The more than 270 legislators, who are currently attending a three-week retreat at the National Leadership Institute at Kyankwanzi, were urged to be people-centered.
In an interview yesterday, some of the MPs said they underwent training in several topics meant to sharpen their mindset in regard to the NRM ideology.
“We have so far been taught on areas of political economy, situation in the country and also physical training like how to use a gun. We have been made to understand how politicians can use their positions to bring about development in their constituents,” Mr William Chemonges, the MP-elect of Kween County, said last evening.
Mr Chemonges also revealed that the party leadership was contemplating on taking them through Uganda’s political history to avoid repeating mistakes that past leaders committed.
“Most MPs at Kyankwanzi are young, which means there is need for them to appreciate more about where we are coming from and also enable them deliver on areas that sustain [the NRM] government in power,” he said.
The retreat, which started on April 7 and runs up to April 29, aims at orienting the MPs with the party philosophy.
The NRM’s director of information, publicity and public relations, Mr Emmanuel Lumala Dombo, in a statement yesterday urged them to focus on issues affecting their electorate.
“We urge all our MPs-elect not to abandon their people. Five years is not a long time, they should stay close to the people they lead. They should, however, not carry the burden of the constituency on their shoulders,” Mr Dombo said.
