Police officer arrested for raping suspect

MBALE.

Police in Mbale District have arrested a police officer attached to Sukari Police Booth in Namakwekwe Ward, Northern Division on charges of raping a suspect in custody.
The Elgon region Police Spokesperson, Mr Suwed Manshur confirmed the arrest on Saturday and  identified the suspect as Joel Magombe, 37, who allegedly committed the offence on Friday night.
"The suspect has been arrested and currently detained at Mbale Central Police Station," Mr Manshur, said.
Mr Manshur said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect persuaded the woman, whom he didn't name, to go and spend a night at his home instead of transferring her to the central police station.
The victim had been arrested over failure to pay a debt she had borrowed from a SACCO.
"The suspect used that advantage and allegedly raped her at night," he said.
Mr Manshur said they subjected the victim and suspect to medical examination to prove the allegations of rape.
"The medical examination proved that they had sexual intercourse, though we could not confirm whether it was rape," Mr Manshur said.
The victim, however, told Police that the suspect forcefully had sex with her.
Mr Manshur said the suspect will be charged with rape after Police investigations.
