KIRYANDONGO-Traffic police officers attached to Kiryandongo Central Police station Wednesday manhandled a truck driver who allegedly attempted to fight traffic officers at a check point.

The incident happened on the Kampala Highway at about midday a near Kiryandongo town.

The unidentified driver met his fate after being stopped at a traffic police checkpoint.

A witness who preferred anonymity to speak freely said the police traffic officers took both the driver’s duplicate and original driving permits.

They, however, declined to handover the original copy to the driver prompting him to protest.

According to an eye witness who took pictures at the scene, the two police officers intervened by beating the driver whom they accused of trying beat up their colleague.

“I retreated to my car when the scuffle heated up and I couldn’t help the hapless driver,” the witness said.

Mr Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesman could neither confirm nor deny the incident saying he did not have details.

Mr Charles Mubala, the officer in charge of operations at Kiryandongo Central said he was not aware about the incident.

Mr Mubala referred this reporter to the Kirandongo District Police Commander, Mr Joseph Bakaleke.

Several attempts to contact Mr Bakaleke were futile since his known telephone contacts were unavailable.
