Police rescue ‘dead man’ from angry mourners

Residents say it's not the first time Okello is feigning death only to emerge and claim condolence money collected at his funeral.
Police have rescued a rescued a 33-year old man from angry mourners who wanted to lynch him over allegations that he had feigned death to rob them.
A friend to Mr Godfrey Okello, a resident of Kamwokya village in Buyengo sub-county in Jinja District is said have called relatives on phone saying he had been shot dead at the Busia border by URA enforcement officers as they tried to smuggle cigarettes from Kenya.
As a result, relatives organised his funeral and dug his grave.
As they prepared to pick his body, Okello, emerged alive and unhurt.
The residents became bitter accusing Okello trying to extort money from them. They grabbed him and tried to force him into the grave they had dug.
However, police arrived on time to rescue Okello whom residents wanted to burry live.
When asked, Okello denied making any calls announcing his death.
According to residents, it was not the first time Okello announced his death and extorted them money they had sent as condolences.
Mr Samson Lubega, the Kiira region police spokesperson warned residents against mob action saying suspected criminals should be handed over to police for the law to take its course.
