What you need to know:

  • The church claims to have baptised 100,000 people this year alone, a significant number that contradicts the UBOS findings.

The Seventh-day Adventists in greater Mukono have rejected the national population census figures, citing inaccuracies in the Uganda Bureau of Statistics' (UBOS) results.

During the SDA Church thanksgiving ceremony for East Buganda at Hilton High School Mukono, Archbishop Dr Moses Maka expressed concerns. "We are not two percent as per UBOS results released 2024, we are more than that and therefore ask them to recount us for proper figures."

The church claims to have baptised 100,000 people this year alone, a significant number that contradicts the UBOS findings. Dr. Maka urged his congregation to work hard and seize opportunities for a better life, emphasizing the importance of utilizing their youthful energy.

"The energy you have now, use it to work hard and try all possible opportunities to have a better living. Most of you are young with enough energy; don't realize you have nothing at a late age," Dr. Maka advised.

The controversy surrounding the census figures has sparked public outcry, particularly regarding contradictory population numbers. For instance, the Acholi population allegedly dropped from 2,131,443 to 1,941,913, while other tribes, like the Bagisu, also showed a decline.

Ms. Rhoda Kagaga, Mukono Municipality RCC, highlighted the rising domestic violence in the area. "Many men are selling off property without informing women, and chasing women out of homes is high, which is bad and denies them rights." Kagaga urged the Adventists to help raise awareness and promote effective family management.

State Minister for Kampala, Mr. Kabuye Kyofatogabye, representing President Museveni, encouraged Adventists to join the fight against poverty. "Preach against poverty, tell people to work hard, and engage in government projects to help fight poverty in the country."

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics recently removed the main report for the 2024 National Population and Housing Census from its website due to public pressure.

The SDA Church's "East Buganda Field" conference, which started in June 2024 after separating from the Central Uganda conference, brought together hundreds of adherents to celebrate their growth and progress.
