Soldier  shoots man over woman in city bar

Kampala- Kira Road Police in Kampala are investigating a case of attempted murder after a UPDF soldier reportedly shot a man in a bar in Bukoto, Kampala.

It is alleged that at about 1:30am while at 400 Bar in Bukoto, the suspect from Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence but attached to police Crime Intelligence Unit shot Mr Moses Mugisha,  a businessman, aged 47.

Sources at Kira Road Police Station told Daily Monitor that the shooting followed a quarrel between the duo over a woman.

A witness only identified as Benson said  he heard gunshots while he was leaving.

“The shooting occurred past midnight. As I was leaving to enter my vehicle, I heard a fight inside the bar. Later, I heard bullets, and people dispersed,” Benson said.

He said the victim, who was in critical condition, was taken to Victoria Hospital.

When contacted, the Defence spokesperson, Brig Flavia Byekwaso, confirmed the incident, adding that the soldier had been deployed in the police Crime Intelligence Unit.

“When the shooting happened, the officer reported himself to Brig Sserunjoji Damulira, the director of police Crime Intelligence. Brig Damulira instructed Kira Road CID to investigate the circumstances under which the shooting occurred,” Brig Byekwaso said.

Kampala Metropolitan police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed they are investigating the case.

“There was a shooting at that bar and police visited the scene. They picked four pistol cartridges from the scene and efforts to have the suspect arrested are underway as investigations continue,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.
