Tension as Buyaga East NRM election results are delayed

Tension is building up in Buyaga East County following the delay by the NRM party to declare results for the respective candidates who participated in the just concluded MP primaries.
Supporters of rival aspirants are up in arms, questioning why the process of declaring the winner is taking a slow pace.
The incumbent, Eric Musana said the race, which attracted seven candidates, where he participated, was conducted successfully, but they have not heard from the electoral body since last Friday.
He insists he emerged victor after he reportedly won in the 14 sub counties and said he must be declared winner.
“My supporters are all restless and they don’t know what next. We thought our party’s electoral body would announce the winner immediately after tallying was done as stipulated in our party constitution but we waited in vain,” said Mr Musana while addressing a press conference in Kampala yesterday.
“We are afraid that the continued delay might culminate into violence,” he warned.
Other candidates who participated in the race are Steven Twesigye, Peter Amara, Tukamushaba Amooti, Robert Birungi, Diini Kisembo. Patrick Kakooza and Bright Alinaitwe.
The legislator yesterday appealed to the NRM electoral commission chairperson, Dr Tanga Odoi to intervene.
“All we are asking is the open tallying of the electoral commission results in the constituencies where results have not been declared,” he said.
Mr Musana told journalists in Kampala that results had been delayed by seven days now.
“We request that the district electoral commission together with the NRM national electoral commission in the presence of all candidates should come together and review the results and declare the winner,” he said.
He also attributes the mess in the elections to a directive that allowed non-registered voters to participate.
Mr Odoi could not be reached for a comment but the deputy chairperson of the NRM electoral commission, Mr Arimpa Kigyagi when contacted yesterday said that they still have five constituencies in which they will declare results.
They have requested the candidates to submit their declaration forms so that the commission can do the tallying.
The constituencies include Ntoroko county, Mbale city, Jinja city, Buyaga East and Butembe County.
