Three drown as boat capsizes in Lake Victoria
KALANGALA - Three fishermen on Tuesday drowned in Lake Victoria. The trio were on fishing mission at Kyagalanyi Peer in Bujumba Sub County, Kalangala District.
According to Mr Ivan Ssendijjo, an eyewitness, the victims had gone to pick their fishing nets when strong waves struck their boat.
“We tried as much as we could to save them but failed to establish where they were," Mr Ssendijjo said.
The officer in charge of Kalangala Police Station, Mr Ivan Tenywa told journalists that they retrieved two bodies of the fisherman but one body is still missing.
The incident comes days after six people were rescued by the Marine police when their boat capsized near Kitobo Landing Site in Kalangala District.
Mr Maurice Kalanzi, the coordinator Swim Safe Uganda, a non-government organisation that trains different islanders in water rescue skills told Daily Monitor that people need survival skills in case their boats capsize.
Twelve people have drowned in Kalangala District in the last two months, according to report at Kalangala Police Station.
