The king of Tooro, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru has marked his coronation silver jubilee coronation anniversary celebrations (Empango) at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal.

The 28-year-old King Oyo, ascended the throne at the age of three in 1995.

Due to the existing standard operation procedures to control the spread of coronavirus, the it was a scientific celebration and thanksgiving that attracted about 200 people.

The kingdom cancelled the Empango celebrations and opted for a thanksgiving ceremony that was presided over by a section of religious leaders.

Mr Barnard Tungwako, the kingdom’s prime minister said that when the country is not at peace due to wars or pandemics like COVID-19, the king cancels the Empango celebrations and opts for thanksgiving.

President Museveni who was unable to attend as the chief guest, was represented by Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda.

Bishop Reuben Kisembo of Ruwenzori Diocese asked the King to get a wife.

He said that as church leaders, they are advising the king to do so not under pressure.

“We are not pressurising you but we are advising you,” Bishop Kisembo said.

It is not the first time the King Oyo is asked to get a wife.

Last year, during the Empango celebrations, Fort Portal Municipality Member of Parliament, Mr Alex Ruhunda asked him to marry.

Bishop Kisembo said that church leaders in the kingdom had stopped commenting on the affairs of the monarchy because when Mr Museveni instituted a committee to reconcile King Oyo and his cousin Prince David Kijanangoma, misunderstandings between the church and the kingdom emerged.

Bishop Kisembo said that church leaders have since reconciled with the kingdom.

In 2015, President Museveni instituted a committee to resolve the impasse between King Oyo and Prince  Kijanangoma.

King Oyo was being questioned by Prince Kijanangoma over alleged misuse of land, being absent from the kingdom, among other issues.

King Oyo encouraged the public to always follow the ministry of health guidelines to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

“People need to wash their hands, avoid public gatherings, wear masks, keep social distance and follow guidelines of the Ministry of Health,” he said.
