Police in Tororo District are holding a mother of three over allegations of dumping a 1-day-old baby boy into a pit latrine.

Aisha Ndinya was arrested on Monday morning after a tip from concerned citizens who discovered a baby crying inside an abandoned pit latrine in Agururu "A" 2 Village, Agururu Parish in Tororo Municipality’s Western Division.

Locals say “the baby was discovered by one of the neighbours who had gone to ease himself and immediately informed police who later rushed and retrieved the baby.”

He then took it to Tororo Hospital for better management.

“Ndinya was the main suspect because she was the only pregnant tenant in the area. A day before, she had an upset in movement, implying that she was on labor. She was also planning to go abroad for external labor in the United Arab Emirates (UAE),” resident Aaron Were told Monitor.

Agururu Parish councilor Salim Safi noted that the baby survived because the facility was not in use for a long time.

“The suspect might have dumped the baby at night because neighbors claim she apparently gave birth on Sunday at around 2 pm,” he noted.

Western Division LC3 chairperson Mohammed Ali Munyadi condemned the act and asked the police not to handle the matter lightly because the vice seems to be becoming common.

A police officer who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity said they are “preferring charges of attempted murder against the suspect.”

At Tororo district general hospital, medics confirmed that the baby had normal temperature of 36 degrees (Celsius) and weighing over 2 kilograms- meaning that the baby was delivered normally, according to health experts.
