Two arrested over stolen malaria drugs
KABERAMAIDO- Police in Kaberamaido District are holding two men who were found in possession of government malaria drugs.
According to a police the men were intercepted moments after disembarking from a ferry at Namasale in Amolatar District.
They were transferred to Kaberamaido District where they had allegedly stolen the Coartem drugs.
Ms Nancy Apio, the Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations at Kaberamaido Central Police Station, said on Friday that the drugs belonged to Kalaki Health Centre III, Kobulubulu Health Center III and Kaberamaido District Hospital.
“They stole the drugs with the help of some government officials. They used a Toyoya Super Custom vehicle Reg. No, UAY 727 to transport the drugs,” she said.
Kaberamaido Resident District Commissioner, Mr Jimmy Ebil said the drugs valued at Shs14.5 million were stolen from the district stores.
He said the officer in charge of the store is on the run.
Police, according to Mr Ebil, have summoned officials who are in charge of the three health centres have been summoned to record statements.
Mr Ebil said three police detectives have been detained for allegedly attempting to remove government labels from the recovered boxes, which implies that they were aiding the theft.
