An official vehicle of the Bukedea District LC5 chairperson was on Christmas Day involved in an accident, killing two of his family members, including his brother.

Two other occupants suffered injuries and are receiving treatment.

Mr Moses Olemukan, the district chairperson, confirmed the death of his family members and blamed it on recklessness.
Mr Francis Masereka, the officer-in-charge of Bukedea Central Police Station, told Daily Monitor yesterday that the car overturned in Akworo Village in Bukedea Sub-county on Tuesday at 11am.

He said the driver, who is still on the run, failed to negotiate a sharp bend, forcing the car to overturn a couple of times and in the process killing the two occupants.

Speaking to Daily Monitor on telephone yesterday, Mr Olemukan said he had gone for Christmas prayers when he received the sad news of the death of his brother Micheal Opolot, 34, and his 22-year-old brother-in-law Emmanuel Ojulong. “I left the vehicle and the keys at home. I am told the driver, who is on the run, demanded for the keys from my daughter and even slapped her to release them because he was with my brother,” Mr Olemukan said.

The two are said to have died on the spot while his nine-year-old daughter, Elizabeth Asia, sustained injuries and his 14-year-old son Dan Olemukan is still unconscious.

Mr Olemukan said preliminary information indicates that the group had planned to take a joyride within Bukedea town while the chairman was still attending church.

Mr Masereka said: “The latest findings in our investigations indicate that the driver was speeding by the time he lost control of the vehicle.”

Asked to comment on the matter, Mr Micheal Odongo, the East Kyoga police spokesperson, said the matter was an administrative issue.
