A 60-year-old woman in Katunguru fishing village has accused the police of failure to pay rent for her house, which accommodates Katunguru Police Post, for more than six years. Ms Furegensio Bukura said despite numerous reminders, the police have not paid her Shs30 million in rent arrears.

Ms Bukura said she has instructed her lawyers to file a lawsuit against police over the matter. She added that she was tired of travelling to the police headquarters in Kampala to demand for the money that is not forthcoming.

Demands
Ms Bukura said she has instructed her daughter, Ms Zarika Nsasirabo to continue pursuing the rent arrears. “I am diabetic and I could not afford travelling all the time to demand money for police headquarters in Kampala,” she said.

Ms Bakura presented her grievances to the Kasese Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr Milton Odongo, who had visited Katunguru for a security meeting recently. She said the Shs30 million rent had accumulated over several number of years. Last month, the police paid her Shs1.27 million.

She wants police to vacate her premises and renovate her building. “My house was a lodge. I rented it out to police. They have spoilt it but I was surprised when they summoned me that I was to be arrested for not renovating the houses yet I have not been paid for quite long. Enough is enough. I want my money and police should leave my house,” Ms Bukura said during the security meeting.

Bukura’s daughter Ms Nsasirabo told the RDC that she is worried that her family may not be paid. Mr Odongo ordered the district internal security officer to investigate the concerns of the landlord.

RDC calls for investigation
He tasked the Kasese District Police Commander to explain to the public why police had not paid rent. But the officer-in charge of Kasese Police Station, Mr James Katushabe, who represented the district police commander, Mr Michael Musani Sabila at the meeting, said rent is paid by the police head office and promised that the landlord’s concerns would be addressed.
