Senior golfers lead way in revamp of Kabale Club
KAMPALA. During the reign of former Uganda Golf Union (UGU) boss Johnson Omollo, one of his key pillars was a revamp of the upcountry golf courses.
But probably, Kabale Sports Club didn’t feel his desire and deliberate effort towards that direction much.
Kabale Sports Club, which has been in existence since the 1940s, has not held a UGU event in more than two years. This has been bothered the sons of their land.
“We want Kabale back to where it belongs,” Dr. Sam Zaramba, a borne of Kabale, told Daily Monitor in an interview.
Zaramba, who is also the chairman board of trustees of UGC, recalls around 1952 that Kabale was a hub of activity.
“We used to play from there and we would be chased away,” the 73-year-old reminisced.
But times have changed. Now the Uganda Seniors Golfing Society (USGS) where Zaramba falls, is leading the initiative to grow the vibe again at Kabale.
This is through the Kabale Seniors Golf Challenge that is set for November 3 at the nine-hole par-70 course.
“Over the last two years or so, Kabale Sports Club has had some challenges of management to an extent that, there has not been a big golf tournament especially a Union event,” noted Kabale’s chairman Elvis Twenda who was ushered into office back in July.
“Traditionally, Kabale Sports Club used to host the Easter and Independence competition on the Union calendar,” said Zaramba who first played golf as a refugee in Lesotho 37 years ago.
“So we are asking all the golfers in Uganda with a handicap to come to Kabale and join golfers through the seniors’ initiative as we revamp the activities regards golf in the Kigezi region,” he added.
A field of 80 players with 30 from USGS is expected delight in the beautiful ambiance during the event.
