KAMPALA.

Jinja-based Fred Wanzala continued his fairytale run this year by winning the professionals category at the 61st Uganda Ladies Open at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club (UGC) Kitante course on Friday.

Nicknamed Kafupi because of his diminutive stature, the 24-year-old once again towered over the 14 other local professionals after one of the sponsors saved the day to take care of the paid ranks group at the 11th hour.

Wanzala’s round of one-over-par 73 wasn’t even better than the two ladies; Angel Eaton (69) and Flavia Namakula (71) that were favoured to win the coveted three-day showpiece that climaxed yesterday but it was good enough to edge his closest challenger Deo Akope (74) by a single shot.

Rusty
“We were all a bit rusty,” confessed the soft-spoken Wanzala after the final leaderboard was approved. “The scores tell the full story. But we couldn’t let up the chance to compete in such a prestigious event. One can say I was luckier on the day.

This victory gives me joy and confidence going forward.”
Wanzala recently won the Pepsi Independence Day trophy, Castle Lite Onito Memorial Open and the season-opening Lady Captain’s Prize.
