Ssimbwa ‘blames Fufa’ for long overdue Pilsner soccer award

Sam Ssimbwa

What you need to know:

  • Ssimbwa was also given a four game touchline ban by the Fufa Disciplinary Committee in late January for ‘tribalistic comments’ after his side’s game against Kirinya-Jinja SS in February which made him ineligible for the monthly awards despite his team’s good record.

KAMPALA. Sam Ssimbwa has done a decent job as URA coach with the club sitting third on the StarTimes Uganda Premier League log 10 points behind leaders KCCA with five games left.
The Tax Collectors have in fact collected 21 points, the most in the second round ahead of Vipers (18) and KCCA (17).
This includes a seven-game unbeaten run that resulted in Ssimbwa being awarded the March Pilsner coach-of-the-month award that he received yesterday.

The outspoken coach believes the award was long overdue and he could have collected more were it not for his fractious relationship with domestic football governing body Fufa.
“Sometimes I even think when I don’t win as many awards it might be down to the federation. That’s why I take part in everything be it education, or coaching courses,” he said at the function at which he also received shs1m. Ssimbwa also believes he is being targeted by journalists who he said work for the federation.

“You know I’m not liked at Fufa so I do everything to see that I’m perfect. I have a good relationship with journalists but not all of you. Some are always looking for negative comments for me to pay fines. When I was at KCCA someone trapped me with a recorder and whether the voice was mine or not I don’t remember. Then they took it to Fufa and I lost my job. And they connived with Magogo and I lost my job which I cherished because KCCA is a family to me,” he further explained.

Ssimbwa was also given a four game touchline ban by the Fufa Disciplinary Committee in late January for ‘tribalistic comments’ after his side’s game against Kirinya-Jinja SS in February which made him ineligible for the monthly awards despite his team’s good record.
“Then in Jinja I was asked why I was angry. I told them I was angry because my team had been cheated but if you were not a Musoga you would have equally been angry but because this your team and they said I’m being tribalistic and was suspended and fined shs2m. How do I trust you? How is that promoting me,” explained Ssimbwa who has since shunned post-match interviews.
