Charles Ssali cemented his hero status as the Under 16 Boys President’s Cup climaxed on Friday. Ssali pounced on a loose ball for the game’s solitary goal as St Mary’s College Kitende edged hardworking St Andrew’s Rubindi Secondary School 1-0 in the final held at the Njeru Technical Center’s astro turf pitch.

The enterprising striker, who scored in each of the five games he played, finished as joint top scorer of the tournament alongside teammate Noordine Bonjur.

The winning strike came five minutes from time off a free kick from Bernard Ssetubba to break the stubborn defensive display and hard work exhibited by the Hoima-based team. Kitende received Shs3m from tournament sponsor Lawrence Mulindwa. The Fufa president, pledged that Fufa will take note of youngsters that had exhibited good skills in the tournament.

“We as Fufa shall continue to monitor the progress of the best players in this tournament,” said Mulindwa.
“From now onwards other Fufa programmes like referees courses, women’s inter region tournaments will take place here at this turf. This is the region’s new home ground and center for soccer related activities.”

Bukumi’s rough play earned them 10 yellow cards and one red but it was Jinja Secondary School that are likely to face disciplinary action. Jinja SS threatened violence when they lost 5-3 to JIPRA in post match penalties.
“We will not tolerate indiscipline and shall punish whoever is found guilty,” said Mulindwa. Nesta Ahabwe and Bonjur (top scorer) from Rubindi and Kitende were crowned as the tournament’s joint best players.
