Bring romance back to your bedroom

Want to stoke the fire of passion in your relationship? Gillian Nantume gives tips on how you can let your creativity run wild.

If you are looking to re-ignite the romance in your relationship, then your bedroom is the place where your efforts should be concentrated. There are some people who would claim that a bedroom is the most important room in their homes because it is the place where you and your partner can relax and unwind. It is only natural that you would feel more romantic in your bedroom, away from the children and work. This is not a project that you should go alone; instead you should involve your partner in this redecorating scheme.

Colours
Carefully choose a theme colour for your bedroom because some colours can actually kill the romance, instead of tiring it. The colours should not be only about the walls, you need to have either the same or complimenting colours for the curtains, bedspreads and pillow covers. Warm colours are what you should consider if your bedroom is to look and feel romantic. Try to steer clear of stark whites and go for lavenders, creams or even soft rose and peach.
The bed
The bed should be the focal point in your bedroom, so most of your efforts should be directed towards it. There are many ways to alter the look of your bed, the first being to have special netting around the bed that goes from the ceiling to the floor. The netting can be of any fabric, either muslin or lace or gauze. The colours of the net should match or at least complement the colours of your bed cover and pillows and blend with the theme color of your room. The bedsheets, bed covers and pillows should also be in soft hues that compliment the colours of your walls.

Lighting
Nelly Kisembo, a relationship counselor, advises that the type of lighting you have is an important factor in your romance. “A small change in the lights has been known to change the mood of a bedroom from an ordinary one to a romantic one,” she says. “A variety of light bulbs colours can be used, just as long as the light is not white. Sometimes, the overhead bulb might be too much light, in this case have some bedside lampshades on hand or install a new lighting system that caters for wall lighting. Scented candles will also add spice to your bedroom for besides their gentle light, the scent they give off is refreshing. With candles, all you have to do is light them, lie back and watch the flames while you talk.

Music
What kind of sound would you like to be associated with your bedroom every time your partner thinks about it? It’s high time you left the loud music in the living room and fill your bedroom with soothing love ballads, soul and other soft music. For a long time now, music has been known to soothe troubled souls and your partner wouldn’t want to come back to deafening sounds after a long hard day.

Clear the clutter
There is nothing that dampens romance more than an untidy, dirty bedroom, filled with littered clothes, paper and other junk. Turn out your bedroom at least every weekend to rid yourself of unwanted items and general dirt or dust. Some bedrooms double as home offices or dining rooms, and in such cases, your cleaning should be more frequent. You could also do with a flower vase or two with fresh flowers everyday to give the bedroom some life. Since not everyone can afford roses, almost any type of flower will do as long as its colour compliments your general theme colour.
