Dressing the pear shape

The best jeans and skirts are those without extra details to emphasise your curvy lower section.

This week, we start off with the pear shape, arguably the commonest shape seen on Ugandan women. Women with this shape have large hips and a tiny bust.

It can also be referred to as the triangle shape. Women with this shape have a well-defined shape with hips that are wide compared to the rest of the body and a nicely defined waist.
The best examples of women with this shape include Anita Fabiola, Brenda Nanyonjo, Winnie Nwagi, Desire Luzinda and Bettina Tinah has the slim pear shape. Most curvy Uganda ladies have this shape.

Putting your look together
When dressing a pear shape;
• Dress to create a balanced look, adding fullness to the top of your body and also emphasizing your slim waist.
• Clothes that fill out your top half while flattering the bottom are the best option for this shape.
• Always accentuate your waistline. The most important rule for dressing a pear shape is to define your waist and also be tasteful in your choice of clothing.

What may not work well

 Embellished details and bright colours or patterns around your hips/thighs.
 Hem lines that finish at your widest part. Like miniskirts, shorts or jackets that stop at your hips or thighs, they draw attention to those areas. Artistes have been known to force their way into these micro mini-dresses that do their beautiful body no justice.
 Although comfortable, drop-waist dresses, which don’t really define the mid section, hide your defined waist. They do work well too but pick them carefully.

What is a pear body shape?

Some of the features that define the pear shape include;
• A small waist.
• Hips and thighs that are wider than the rest of the body.
• A bust smaller than the bottom.

What to wear
• Off shoulder or boat neck tops, and V-necks work well with your frame because they show off your slim neck and equally slim shoulders.
• Structured/textured sleeves help fill out your shoulders and make them appear broader.
• Create the illusion of a fuller bust by wearing tops with details around the bust. It could be pockets, embellishments, frills or a bow.
• Wearing bright colours and patterns on top helps take attention away from your wider areas.
• High waist cut skirts or trousers help draw attention to your waist and away from your hips.
• A-line skirts and slightly full skirts that skim your body without creating more volume help to conceal your wider areas.
• Dark coloured trousers and jeans without visible pockets help create a slimming effect on your thighs.
• Boot cut or tapered jeans and trousers.
• Wide leg trousers and jumpsuits also look good
with this shape.
