Rwenzori Courts to get a make-over

Above are the new house plans for the proposed Rwenzori Towers.

What you need to know:

The proposed Rwenzori Towers is an upcoming development on Plot 6, Nakasero Road Kampala. The developers are Pine Investments Ltd; a Private Limited Liability Company owned by Ugandans.

The development of Rwenzori Towers is set to give the place a new look, create more office space and a larger parking area.

The proposed Rwenzori Towers is an upcoming development on Plot 6, Nakasero Road Kampala. The developers are Pine Investments Ltd; a Private Limited Liability Company owned by Ugandans. The project is also co-funded by International Finance Corporation (IFC), a department of the World Bank and DEG- a funding body of the Federal Republic of Germany. The proposed development is the first Private sector building construction project that DEG has agreed to fund in Africa and that IFC has also agreed to fund it for over five years.

The overview
The Rwenzori Towers development will provide approximately 12,000 sqm of highly flexible office accommodation and 3,000 sqm of retail space, arranged around a central courtyard with landscaping and water features. This development will form the third element of the existing Rwenzori commercial developments and the design will integrate with and benefit the existing developments by retaining the traditional theme of the existing buildings, but with a more contemporary design.

The new development will create over 400 car parking bays, arranged on three levels. This will greatly improve the parking ratio to the existing buildings and also provide more space for both the visitors to the Rwenzori Complex and the general public thus alleviating the pressure on parking.

For this to be done, a temporary parking on plot 2 Siad Barre (opposite Sheraton Hotel) has been secured for the Rwenzori Courts and Rwenzori House tenants which will be in usage for four months. Phase one of the project will entail construction of the Rwenzori House and Rwenzori Courts parking decks that will take a duration of four months after which the tenants will be able to relocate back to their parking premises. Once the tenants have vacated the temporary parking, the greenery of the plot will be restored.

The new parking zones will be inter-linked by a series of connecting bridges and ramps, allowing the users of all the premises easy access to three controlled entrances/exits onto Nakasero and Lumumba roads, assisting to minimise congestion on Nakasero Road by providing alternative egress.

Impact assessment
An Environmental Impact Assessment for the Project was carried out and certified by the National Environment Management Authority. Approval from Kampala City Council was obtained. Construction started in February 2010 and will last up to 18 months for the entire project.
It is believed that the development will lead to the creation of several jobs in the facilities management sector as well as during the construction phase of the project.
