How can I write a good job motivational letter?

Alice Nankya L. Nsibuka

A job advert has listed a motivation statement as one of the requirements but I am not sure how to go about it. I badly need to grab this job and have been practicing how to write a motivational statement. How can I write a winning job application motivation statement? Phoebe

Dear Phoebe,
Time is precious from the recruiter’s perspective and a poorly written motivation statement is the last thing they would want to read. Just imagine they receive up to hundreds of applications for one single vacancy! Sometimes a motivation letter is what will set you apart from other candidates.

It is important to note that a motivational statement/letter and a job application/cover letter serve the same purpose. The rationale is to convince the recruiter that you are the perfect candidate for a given position. Your motivation letter should be dynamic, short and precise, maximum 1 A4 sized page or less. It should be customised to the vacancy and the company you’re applying to, with no abbreviations, big/complex words, technical jargon and spelling mistakes.

Remember this is an opportunity for you to highlight certain aspects about your CV. Tell the story behind your outstanding achievements or talk about your inspiration behind choosing that particular degree and the relevant skills that you possess. However, do not be afraid to share your weaknesses or struggles encountered while striving for your achievements. This demonstrates self-awareness and the fact that obstacles don’t stop you from achieving set objectives.

Emphasise ways in which you can contribute to the company, but also describe how it may enhance your personal growth. Briefly indicate your goal which is getting an invitation for a job interview and have someone else read before sending it.
