Indian community injects Shs600 billion into health, education

The Indian community has revealed that they are set to inject about Shs600 billion as an investment into mainly health and education sectors of the country.

"We contribute up to 60 per cent of Uganda's economy and promise to attract more investors such that we can boost the health and education sectors among others," Mr Rao Mohan, the Chairperson of Indian Association said during the Afro Indian Investment summit to celebrate 100 years of Indian Association in Uganda.

The investment summit is set to attract and forge business relationships with Ugandan business community.

They asked Mr Museveni to allocate them an industrial park so that they can encourage more investors to come and boost investment in the country.

"We want to encourage investors to come and invest in manufacturing, value addition to agriculture produce and minerals, business processes and outsourcing among others," he said.

The Indian Nationals so far own about 1,383 industries in Uganda and have invested 3.1 billion dollars for the last 20 years.

"We want to increase the capacity, that's why we are taking up these projects," he said.

The Indian Association also supported 103 heart surgeries last year and plans to sponsor 100 people for the same by the end of this year, whereby 34 have already been operated and six left over the weekend for India.

The State Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Mr David Bahati, congratulated Indians for marking 100 years in Uganda noting that they contribute over 55 per cent of the taxes in the country.
