Journalists’ association leader charged with defamation

KAMPALA-The president of Uganda Journalists Association (UJA), Mr Bashir Kazibwe who is accused of defaming a Kampala-based pastor, has been bailed.

Mr Kazibwe is accused of defaming Pastor Daniel Walugembe of Eternal Gospel Church in Katanga, a Kampala slum.

 The slum is located between Makerere and Mulago hills in Kampala.

He denied the charges during a session that was presided over by Mr Robert Mukanza, at Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court.

Ms Beatrice Nabuule Mukwaya, Mr Hassan Segawa Kambuga and Mr Thomas Bagonza; the Kimwanyi Local Council 1 chairman in Katanga slum, who are Mr Kazibwe’s co-accused, also denied the charges.

Upon taking plea, the suspects, asked for bail.

Mr Mukanza, granted each suspect a non-cash bond of Shs4million.

The sureties were each bonded at non-cash bond of Shs4million. 

Prosecution led by Ms Patricia Chingtho told court that on January 5, 2019, the suspects at Katanga and other places, including Industrial Area in Kampala, caused the publication of a defamatory matter to be published in Bukedde, a Luganda newspaper, which adversely injured the reputation of Pastor Walugembe.

The case was adjourned to March 28.
