Kampala and Wakiso experience power blackout following strong winds
Several parts of Kampala and Wakiso have experienced a power blackout, following strong winds that swept the city Friday evening, felling trees and electric poles.
Subsequently, electricity distribution company Umeme issued a statement on social media explaining the repercussions.
“Due to the heavy rains, we have experienced multiple faults along the power lines around Kampala. We are working to ensure that we resolve and have safe power restored at the earliest,” their tweet reads.
By Saturday Morning, power has not yet been restored in most of the affected areas, as residents took to social media to express their frustration.
“The wind huffed and puffed in Munyonyo - Buziga area and poof, power went off! No rain, just huffing and puffing of wind... We await you in Munyonyo to restore power,” @MikeKwats tweeted.
“Since no one said Kira, umeme we also don't have. And you are not allowed to ignore please,” @Nicholaspercy tweeted.
In retaliation, umeme said their team was working to restore the power, and asked people to be patient.
“Restoration is ongoing partially as keep 'isolating' the faults and work on the breakdowns. Please bear with us,” umeme responded.
To ensure safety, the public has been advised to report any broken poles.
“As we work towards restoring electricity after the storm, please #StayAlert and report any broken poles or wires through our toll free lines 0800 385385 or 0800 285285.”
