King Oyo named UNAIDS envoy in anti-HIV fight

A United Nations official has said traditional leaders in Uganda have played a crucial role in the fight against the HIV/Aids scourge.
Prof Sheila Tlou, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) regional director for Eastern and Southern Africa, says because of traditional leaders influential role, the UN will work with them.
“If we are to end HIV/Aids in 2030, we have to engage cultural leaders. They are a very important compliment,” Tlou said.
The UN official made the pledge while endorsing Toro King Oyo Nyimba Iguru as UNAIDS ambassador in the fighting against the HIV/Aids scourge at Karuzika Palace in Fort Portal Town last Thursday.
