What you need to know:

The vice-President says health workers should be patient as govt plans to increase their salaries.

Vice-President Edward Ssekandi on Saturday commissioned a new building at the Mubende Regional Referral Hospital.

The Shs20 billion building that was funded by the Japanese government, has an outpatient department, male ward, theatre, a modern laboratory and a generator.

Mr Ssekandi urged doctors and nurses not to leave their jobs and stay in the country, saying the government was in the process of increasing their salaries.

He said they were working hard to improve the standards of the health workers, but were still investing in health centres so as to ease pressure on regional hospitals.

“If you were taught to save lives of the people then you should stay at work until your problems are solved,” he said.

He urged the medical staff and the workers to keep the new buildings and equipment in good condition, saying in that way they could serve more people.

State Minister for Primary Healthcare Duties Sarah Opendi said more buildings would be set up at the hospital once funds from the World Bank were received.

She urged the health workers to exalt more professionalism.

“I warn all the medical workers who sell government drugs and soliciting for bribes from patients that they will be punished and disqualified from work,” Ms Opendi said.
